I am... Rocking Alexis Mera - Casey Layne Anderson Styles Out the Granite Print Sweatshirt

After our founder, Alexis Mera Damen, became hooked on Y7 classes (check out her blog post '5 Reasons Everyone Should Try Y7') she started to do some research into the instructors, and came across Casey Lane Anderson.

Inspired by her 'I am' philosophy - focusing on finding the positives and strengths in herself, as opposed to the negatives we are so often reminded of, we invited Casey to style her favorite AM piece and rock four amazing looks featuring the Granite sweatshirt, to suit every mood:

'I am... sexy'

'I am... confident'

'I am... committed'

'I am... strong'

Which one are you today?

AM: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your typical day?

Hi! My name is Casey Layne Anderson. I am an actor, singer, and yoga instructor with a random and fun talent for freestyle rapping. I’m originally from Denver Colorado, I studied Musical Theatre at Carnegie Mellon University, and I recently moved to NYC after living in sunny Los Angeles. I couldn’t be happier to be here - the energy in New York is incredible!

On a typical day you can find me creating, singing, writing music, and possibly recording something I’ve been working on. I am always surrounded by music! That’s one reason I love teaching for Y7 Yoga so much – the emphasis our instructors put on the music creates a really unique and full experience and I love it. I’m obsessed with curating playlists, discovering underground artists, and pretending I’m a professional DJ. I currently teach 10 classes per week for Y7 Yoga. Teaching yoga gives me daily purpose and inspiration. It feels like coming home to myself. You’ll also find me on my own mat, because practicing yoga feels so damn good and keeps me in touch with my breath and body. The more I practice, the better I feel and the better I teach. I also love making breakfast for dinner, going out for live jazz, and exploring the city with friends.

AM: We are intrigued by your ‘I am’ philosophy. Tell us more about it and when and why it began?

When I first moved to Los Angeles in 2013 I was meeting with lots of agents and managers who expressed interested in representing me / sending me on auditions for theatre, film, and television. While discussing my career as an actor, I heard a lot of things like “you’re really pretty, but not skinny enough to be the girl next door or love interest." And "really funny, but too beautiful and not fat enough to be the quirky best friend.” I walked away from those meetings with “you’re not this enough” or “you’re not that enough” rolling around through my head and it really got to me. A few weeks later I realized I was still obsessing over what I wasn’t, rather than focusing on what I was. So in an attempt to change my mindset, I started posting “I Am…” sticky notes around my apartment where I would see them daily (the fridge, my bathroom mirror, etc). Whenever I passed an “I am” sticky note, I made myself fill in the blank with something positive. It helped. It was super simple, yet very effective. I started using this theme in my yoga classes and encouraged students to meditate on the mantra “I am” throughout class. On each inhale think “I am” on each exhale, fill in the blank with something that supports and encourages you. Go wild. Do not restrict yourself with limitations or doubts. "I am…healthy, enough, passionate, focused, rocking my goals, unique, beautiful, an amazing mom, dad, son, daughter, partner, friend, attracting love, a leader, adventurous, love, successful, joy, bliss, compassionate, happy, etc." Your "I am" can be as mystical or literal as you want. As crazy or as simple as you need.

We can get trapped by focusing on what we are not. And our subconscious listens very closely to our inner monologue, so I like to give it something fantastic to celebrate! Try it out!

AM: Tell us about this outfit! Which pieces did you pair your AM gear with, and why?

I paired the granite sweatshirt with 4 different looks.

First, the AM maxi dress! This look makes me feel very feminine and the slit up the back is so fun and sexy. I have worn this dress out so many times and the sweatshirt adds a cool pop of something different while also keeping me warm as the weather cools off.

I also paired my sweatshirt with my jeans.

This particular photo shoot features the sweatshirt with my light wash jeans, but I’ve also paired it with black ripped jeans, dark blue jeans, grey jeans, and everything in-between. This sweatshirt goes really well with all jeans and you can easily dress it up or down with slick boots or fun Adidas. It’s a classic look that is very comfortable and gives me a genuine feeling of confidence.

I also paired my sweatshirt with my AM Granite Jogger Pants and I am committed and OBSESSED with this look! At first, I thought it might be too much of the same pattern, but the moment I tried it on, I was like “oh wait…this is super fresh!” Rihanna would definitely approve.

Finally, I paired my sweatshirt with my black yoga pants. It’s the perfect compliment to any athletic legging. I am strong and so is this look.

AM: Where are 3 places you’d wear your AM Sweatshirt?

  1. Yoga studio -I love wearing my AM sweatshirt right before and after teaching or working out! It’s perfect for all of the seasons because it’s light enough that I don’t get too hot after class, but it also provides warmth as we head into the fall. It’s also super easy to layer, which is great!
  2. Dinner with the girls - I’ve been pairing my sweatshirt with jeans and boots and it makes for a slick yet casual evening look. I’ve worn it out to dinner with girlfriends and it’s the best because I’m SO comfortable and always get compliments. You can dress it up for down depending on the vibe you’re going for.
  3. Concerts – I wore my AM sweatshirt to the A$AP Rocky concert recently (paired with ripped black jeans). I’ve also layered it on top of my AM dress one cold evening listening to a jazz concert. Talk about versatility.

AM: What do you love most about your new AM piece?

How versatile it is! I love that I can dress it up or keep is casual. I also love the material. It provides warmth, but it has lightness to it - totally unique and unlike any of my other sweatshirts.

AM: How would you describe your style in two words?

Fresh & Comfortable.

AM: You teach at Y7, our favorite yoga studio, what do you love most about teaching there?

YAY! I’m so glad you love it so much, isn’t it phenomenal?! I love how much music influences the practice and I love that the studio is candlelit and free of mirrors. It helps the practice feel very intimate, personal, and free of self-criticism. You can feel the energy of the other yogi’s around you, and the candles and dark space help keep the focus inward and the breath strong. I’m also challenged as an instructor to keep the flows fresh, creative, and accessible to all levels. Teaching Y7’s specific structure has stretched me (pun intended) to be a better teacher and I’ve learned a lot from taking other Y7 Instructor’s classes.

AM: You recently moved here from Los Angeles, what do you miss most?

The nature! I really love hiking, so I miss that quite a bit. And of course, all of the amazing friends I made who still live there.

AM: Favorite NYC lunch spot?

Peacefoods. Or ABC Kitchen. I love sitting at the bar with a good book and slowly enjoying every single bite.

AM: One place in the world you would love to visit?

AM:  Favorite song to work out to?

“Touch the Sky” –Kanye West

AM: Favorite yoga pose?

It’s always changing! Lately I’ve really been digging Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose).

AM: Three things that are always in your gym bag?

Hair ties, chapstick, headphones.
