Emily Freeman, a.k.a @lifeinspandex, is spreading a positive message to young women all over America, encouraging us to accept our bodies and see beauty in our imperfections. Having dealt with her own struggle of body acceptance, calorie restricting to fit into the perfect mould of what is 'beautiful', Emily has used fitness to become mentally and physically strong, learning how to look her best, feel her best and most importantly, love herself for her.
Outside of the spandex - Emily is a trained personal trainer - she likes to cook nutritious meals and share her recipes with her readers, teaching us how to be healthy from the inside out.
Doing what she does best, we asked Emily to style up her favorite pair of leggings with the Alexis Mera Dolman top... read on to find out where she is wearing it this Fall!
AM: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your typical day?
EF: My name is Emily. I work in gym management by day and am a health and fitness blogger by night. From staying on top of my own health, teaching barre, working full time in marketing, to creating my blog LifeinSpandex.com, my life is busy to say the least.
My day usually starts out with a workout. I like to say it’s the most important part of my day. And yes, I’m THAT morning person. It’s not easy to get out of the warmth of my comfy bed, but once I do, I’m up! So I prefer to get a sweat in before the rest of my day takes a toll on my energy levels. This also leaves my evenings free to do whatever it is I need or want to do.
Much like the majority of you, the biggest chunk of my day is spent at a full-time desk job - reading emails, answering member questions, working on the gym’s marketing strategies, and managing our front desk and sales teams.
I love what I do. I mean, I get to help people take the next step into reaching their fitness goals as the Membership Lead at the Montage Wellness Center. But, whether it be writing a blog post, coming up with new, fun ways to motivate women to workout and eat healthy, or playing model for a day in a photo shoot, the real fun begins after my workday or on weekends.
I started my blog Life in Spandex after I quit my corporate marketing job in San Francisco to move to Monterey and pursue a personal training career. I wanted to show women everywhere how fun fitness could be, yummy healthy food could taste, and that health and happiness doesn’t come in a one size fits all!
AM: Tell us about this outfit! Which pieces did you pair your AM gear with, and why?
EF: I paired the cute and comfortable Alexis Mera Stratford Dolman top in white with a super fun pair of Niyama Sol leggings. I wanted to offset the relaxed, simple design of the Dolman top with a pair of bright, tight pants to create some color and a nice silhouette.
AM: Where are 3 places you’d wear this outfit?
EF: Where wouldn’t I wear this outfit?! I would rock it at the barre studio or gym, to the grocery store or coffee shop, or on a casual lunch date. It’s so comfortable. Can I just live in it?

AM: What do you love most about your new AM piece?
EFI love the relaxed feel of the Stratform Dolman top. It’s casual and conservative but can be given a hint of sexy by adjusting it off one of my shoulders. I could easily pair this with jeans and boots for more of a fall streetwear look, too!
AM: How would you describe your style in two words?
EF: Simple and sexy.
AM: You’re a Barre instructor and a Personal Trainer, what is the most rewarding part?
EF: The most rewarding part of being a Barre instructor and personal trainer is getting to help people find confidence from the inside out. Fitness is not just about looking good; it’s about feeling your best and being able to live life to the fullest. If you can’t move freely, are getting injured, feeling constantly lethargic, or lacking self-efficacy, it’s hard to put yourself out there and experience the best parts of life. There is one client I will always remember. She had been experiencing major back pain from previous injuries. She came to me with worry and fear about working out. She thought it could make things worse. I quickly changed her mind. We made a goal in October – that she would be able to lift her grandkids without a back brace over the holidays. With her hard work and my guidance, she did it! Needless to say, we both ended up in tears.
AM: If you were deserted on an island, what one item would you want with you?
EF: Don’t hate me – it would definitely be my iPhone. So long as there’s service on this deserted island!
AM: One person past or present that you would love to train personally?
EF: Marilyn Monroe. She was so glamorous. But back then women hadn’t been introduced to strength training. I think it could’ve really helped her mental and physical health.
AM: Favorite lunch spot in Monterey, CA?
EF: That’s a hard one. I’m a sucker for a Whole Foods salad bar. But, I also love this spot called Poke Lab in downtown Monterey. It’s like a Japanese Chipotle!

AM: Favorite sinful treat food?
EF: Ice cream, definitely. Specifically Cold Stone cake batter ice cream with cookie dough, M&M’s, and rainbow sprinkles. :D. I have a major sweet tooth.

AM: One place in the world you would love to visit?
AM: Favorite song to work out to?
EF: At the moment it’s got to be Missy Elliott’s Pass That Dutch. What can I say? It’s a classic ;).
AM: Three things that are always in your gym bag?
EF: Sweet Sweat wrap and cream, headphones, and Carmax chapstick.
